======Your subheading here...===CLICK ON PHOTO FOR INFORMATION===----SARDINIA is the 2nd largest island in the Mediterranean Sea ( after Sicily ) and is Italian. The capital is Cagliari. There are three international airports on the island. ----------I took the ferry from Genova on the mainland to Porto Torres Sardinia. There are two ferry companies, one takes 10 hours and the other 13 hours. Porto Torres was founded in 27AD by the Romans, today is ferry port and oil refineries. I continued by train to Sassari taking about 15 minutes, cost about 2 euro in 2011. ------------------SASSARI is the second largest city on Sardinia, i stayed at Hotel Vittorio Emauule a pleasant place.---Sassari is a nice place to walk round with Piazza D2 Italia and the cathedral of San Nicola.-----A trip i did from Sassari by bus , was to Alghero on the northwest coast, a historic town and seaside resort. There is a train to Alghero but it does not go to centre, bus is best. After 2 nights in Sassari i took the train to Cagliari. taking about 3 hours. (7 trains a day in 2011).Map shows route of my train journeys around Sardinia.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------CAGLIARI is in the south and is the capital of Sardinia and main port. It is historic and modern.-- I stayed at hotel 4 Mori Cagliari. -- There is a tourist train and city tour bus.-- The Castello on top of the hill is the most interesting place, good views of city, port and lagoons. The Bastione San Remy is one way up , there are lifts around the wall. The cathedral Santa Maria is lovely inside and out.-- After a lovely time in Cagliari i took the train to Oliba for a one night stay, then ferry to Civitavecchia on main land Italy. Civitavecchia is handy for Rome.
